BlogBurst for your Blogs

January 5, 2007 – 11:14 pm
Recently I’ve had the good people over at MindPetals helping me promote my “entrepreneurship” category of writing. I haven’t been invited to the 9Rules network as of yet but that’s okay as i may have to wait a while on that one. Recently I came across a Publishing service called BlogBurst that allows you to get the word out about your Blog. They assess your site before they let you know if you are accepted or not. It’s a really cool and simple solution to the age old problem of promotion. The more I work with services such as BlogBurst the more ideas I get as I get closer to running a business and how I can attract an audience to my offerings. Lately I am secretly developing something. After my past ranting about BizCandy a few months back I shifted ideas and ever since I’ve been ...

Adding BlogRolls in Wordpress

January 5, 2007 – 5:46 pm
I wrote a breif little post earlier today about this and i have found a simple way to add a BlogRoll to your site.  If you click on this link it will take you to a thread that contains more information but its a really simple fix.  Are you ready for it? < ?php get_links_list(); ?> This is the easiest and simplest way that I know you can add a BlogRoll to your WordPress.  All you need to do is add that code into your WordPress by going from the Dashboard to the "Presentation" section then go to the theme editor and bring up the Sidebar.php script object and add the above PHP code snippet like this... ... about me < ?php query_posts('pagename=about');?> < ?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?> < ?php the_excerpt();?> < ?php endwhile; endif; ?>                       < ?php get_links_list(); ?>   post categories < ?php wp_list_cats('sort_column=name&optioncount=1&hierarchical=0'); ?> ... If you have any WordPress questions (I know I ...

Enabling the WordPress BlogRoll

January 5, 2007 – 8:48 am
If you’ve been playing around with WordPress and using themes much lately you’ve probably noticed that more and more themes do NOT have a BlogRoll coded into them. Isn’t that annoying? If you are completely new to WordPress you may be asking just what a “BlogRoll” is and the simplest definition that I can give is it is a list that allows you to link to other people’s Blogs. Now that we’ve got that out of the way what I’ve noticed from working with a few themes lately off a few different sites is that they don’t come coded with BlogRolls installed and if you are not a PHP coder then you are left with a theme that looks great but misses a few of the basic qualities of functionality that a WordPress blog has going for it. It is not like you can rip the BlogRoll code ...

J.R.’s Seeds for Wealth – He Interviewed Me!

January 3, 2007 – 9:40 pm
J.R. aka Jim Reimer over at Seeds for Wealth was nice enough to interview me about my business attempts, aspirations and thoughts on business. I must admit that I was surprised but felt inclined to share a bit of my story with him and his readers. Feel free to take a little time and read the article he put together over at Seeds for Wealth and enjoy. I think one of my New Years resolutions will be to put a picture of myself on this site at some point as I am sure that some people may wonder what I look like… then again maybe not. I’ll let you comment about that. Does having a picture of yourself on your site make you more or less credible in your opinion or do you even care? Be honest because I’ll know if you’re lying ;) Lucas

Payment Based on Client Earnings – Paying Per Performance

January 3, 2007 – 3:36 pm
The idea of payment based on performance is nothing really new.  I see a good deal of web-based positions that are pay per performance based popping up.  But as with anything see it when you believe it and believe it when you see it.  Recently I’ve been considering working with a past client that I’ve talked to for years now and I am thinking for taking the next step forward in becoming involved.  What I realize is that most of the opportunities that are presented to potential candidates are based on pipe dreams and not facts.  Some things that I looked at when considering working with this client are… Creditability and Trustworthiness – Not all people that you meet in business are going to have your best intentions in mind and as such you need to develop a nose for sniffing out the B.S. (A skill that many claim to have ...

Nerds, Geeks and the whole lot in Business

January 2, 2007 – 8:53 pm
I was sitting down watching a classic this evening and perhaps you’ve heard of it. It’s called “Revenge of the Nerds”. For anyone out there who’s felt like a bit of an outcast in society or that maybe they just don’t fit in at times I am pretty sure that most people feel this way. Myself, having received a computer science background I can tell you that the “geekie” stigma is revered in Computer Science… The “geekier” or “nerdier” the better. When “Geek” goes “Guru” In business someone who is perceived to be a genius is often tagged with being a “Guru”, and this refers to someone who has an above average understanding and knowledge in a particular area of business. People that most people refer to as "Geeks" usually are really smart in respect to what they love or are passionate about. If you love to ...

Resolutions for your Business

December 30, 2006 – 7:39 am
Perhaps 2006 was a bit of a write-off or maybe you just didn’t achieve what you had hoped to achieve in the past year. Well it’s that time of year when people start to think again about setting goals. You don’t just have to set goals at a particular time of year but since the New Year is coming, why not? Myself I am actually heading off to University part-time and getting involved with Human Resources which I think I’ve mentioned a few times on here :D So what do you hope 2007 brings for you and your business? How do you plan to get there and what are you doing about it right now? Have a Happy New Year, how and wherever, you may celebrate it and we’ll see you in the New Year  Luc

Localization in WordPress Themes and Sites

December 28, 2006 – 9:25 am
Because WordPress is open source it is written by developers worldwide, not all of which speak or write code in English. More recently I have been looking to update the feel of CommerceCubes to something simple and put together. Recently I downloaded a theme and started to customize it to my needs when I realized that the default language on the theme was German. I know that a few Germans have visited my site but still I want to keep everything in English because well that’s the language that I speak. Nothing against Germany though (Great People and Good Beer) :) To curb this problem the concept of Localization was created to aid WordPress users globally. Localization is simply just what the name implies… it localizes your WordPress Blog or Theme to a specific region or language in this case. Most themes that require Localization usually have postings to files that ...

SWOT analysis for your life

December 27, 2006 – 7:39 am
Recently Jim, a poster on here, posted a link for me to check out for the Success Manifesto about life planning. My article yesterday talked about making the “Resolution to Change” which is what I’ve been doing a fair amount of these days. When you are making the resolution to change things in your life it usually comes from analyzing certain aspects of life as they relate to you. For those of you who aren’t sure what SWOT stands for it means… · Strengths · Weaknesses · Opportunities · Threats When you can identify clearly your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats with a particular area of your life you can begin to plan and execute. This links back to my last ...

Life Planning: The Resolution and Promise of Change

December 26, 2006 – 8:59 am
A while back I started writing about life plan for myself and wrote an article to showcase what i had done. To tell you the truth I’ve been working on this over the past few months since I first started and I’ve noticed that some things are starting to change. I bring up the topic of a life plan because the New Year is upon us and that leaves most people thinking about things that they want to change. Most people will make a resolution to lose weight, become wealthier, change jobs and the list goes on. Most people will also start out pretty strong making the commitment to go to the gym, or save that extra 5% to 10% or begin that next job hunt but few will ever succeed at it for a simple reason… “No follow-thru”. It is easy to say “I ...
