Finding a Job that Fits
August 10, 2007 – 11:39 amI was having a conversation the other day with a girl that I went to grade and high school with. She has an excellent education (A Degree and a Diploma) and is feeling like she is just not moving anywhere so she had decided to start looking for a job. The problem is that she doesn’t know what she wants to do or where to focus because so many different things are appealing in job markets. How many people out there are just fresh out of school or maybe you have been out of school for a few years and are looking to change jobs but you are not sure how to do it? If we were in a room you’d see most people are in the same boat as you. Why do you think that is? Most people know what they don’t want to be doing with their lives and only a few people really know their life’s purpose and when they get up in the morning they eat, sleep and breathe it!
If that doesn’t sound like you then that is fine but when it comes to searching for a job you have to really put some thought into what it is that you want to achieve. What is your goal? If your goal is simply to get a job then don’t be surprised if you are working at MacDonald’s or in some dead end type of job. You got yourself there and you can get yourself out of that rut. Now you may be asking, “What does this guy know about crap jobs?” Well, for starters, I’ve had a couple of them. Yes with name tags and the whole deal taking orders some a guy or girl who didn’t know what they were doing.
The greatest gift that we are given as adults is the freedom to choose. We can choose our friends, enemies, lovers and careers but we’ve got to put the energy in to get and see results.
So how to I start to find a job that fits me?
Focus – When I mean focus I mean focus on your core abilities and hone them over time. You will NOT be great today but in time you will do some great things.
Target your Search – By targeting I mean to say that you will need to figure out your goal (i.e. Being a Web Designer) and then take steps to getting there (ie. Handing out resumes to design companies)
Don’t settle just because it’s a job – When you are young you have the choice of hunting for a job that really fits you so why would you stay in a job that doesn’t? If it was a bad dating relationship you wouldn’t stick around to see how it turns out, would you?
Using these three areas will help you decide the best plan of action in your job hunting.
