Blogging, Business and just doing it

February 19, 2007 – 2:15 pm

It’s funny. I took a look outside the bubble of blogging for the last month roughly and realized that I haven’t been focusing on my business goals. That’s a big “No No” because once you find a business that is worth pouring your time into, all your energy goes into it. In reverse, if you say read a lot of Blogs or watch a ton of TV or are preoccupied with other pursuits how do you (or in this case ‘I’) ever expect to develop a successful business? I’ve been wining myself off of outside distractions that take away from productivity. I am all for screwing off from time to time because its healthy, needed and refreshes you in a way that all people need regardless of whether they are building businesses, careers, families… you get the idea.

Is there something that you’ve been putting off doing? Maybe you need to ask yourself why. The things we are most focused on usually yield the best results. Think back to when you completed something or saw something through like that college degree you got. How did it feel to have all your ducks lined up in a row? It felt pretty damn great, right?

Think about the things you gave up in order to make it happen and the distractions that were in the way blocking you from the success that you wanted. As you started to achieve things didn’t you reward yourself with a weekend away from the books for a little road trip? Of course you did… if you didn’t than I don’t want to know you  :D… just kidding!

People who run successful businesses probably don’t Blog that much

The thing I’ve realized in running a Blog is that you can do it but you basically spend all your time either…

  • Thinking of articles to write to keep people coming back
  • Try and find a way to marketing it to get more readers and more advertising revenue

If you really want to get your hands dirty in business then the Blog is the last thing on your mind unless it lends itself to your business. If your sole income is a Blog then you are probably going to fight a losing battle because of the fact that it’s pretty time invasive, stealing away large amounts of your day. If your business involves the development of content as part of the business model I believe this can be sustainable but be careful you aren’t falling into the “Time suckage” trap of wasting hours of your day in this when others are either more important or yield higher returns.  Let me know what you think.
