Nerds, Geeks and the whole lot in Business

January 2, 2007 – 8:53 pm

I was sitting down watching a classic this evening and perhaps you’ve heard of it. It’s called “Revenge of the Nerds”. For anyone out there who’s felt like a bit of an outcast in society or that maybe they just don’t fit in at times I am pretty sure that most people feel this way. Myself, having received a computer science background I can tell you that the “geekie” stigma is revered in Computer Science… The “geekier” or “nerdier” the better.

When “Geek” goes “Guru”

In business someone who is perceived to be a genius is often tagged with being a “Guru”, and this refers to someone who has an above average understanding and knowledge in a particular area of business. People that most people refer to as “Geeks” usually are really smart in respect to what they love or are passionate about. If you love to play the piano and you spend every waking moment around it then chances are you have been or will be labeled a geek by someone or a bunch of some ones. What I am trying to get at is that being a geek in a particular area of business can be a cool thing, unique to who you are so why not embrace it?

You’ll find that once you embrace who you are that you stop fighting with yourself about what you are not it makes life so much easier. You’ll probably also find confidence in yourself that you never knew you had. Give it a try, you may just surprise yourself.
