Business Casual: Dressing the Part in Business

January 14, 2007 – 10:04 am

There is a saying that “The Clothes make the man” or woman but what do you think.  Personally I feel better when I dress better but sometimes I like to bum around the house in a pair of jeans and t-shirt.  Clothes and dressing in general tell other people a lot about a person and when you are representing a business that own the same needs to be said.

Under dressing – A lot of web based business owners would, I suspect, fall into this category simply because if your main interaction with people is through a website, the website says more about you then how you look.  This is the Jeans, T-shirt and Sandals/Runners crew that gets written about by tech magazines for their almost rebel appearance.  You can show up to meetings in Jeans and runners but unless you are catering to the blind selling your service or business may be harder then you originally thought when you slipped on the Thundercats t-shirt, Jeans, and rock climbing shoes.

Overdressing – Most people these days don’t dress in 3 piece suits unless they are getting married, going to a funeral, going to a gala or working in an industry that demands it.  Some people simply overdress when going to a meeting that involves their business because they are not sure how the other side is going to present themselves and they want to look their best.

The best of both worlds – Ever since the invention of “business casual” as a lifestyle a good number of dressing problems have been solved making it easier for guys like me to look professional while still allowing for the relaxed look in the off hours.  Wear those sandals with a pair of dress khakis or dress it up with a nice pair of dress shoes.  Don’t burn your comfort clothes in favorite of more posh settings because you are always going to want them to bum around in when you are writing your blog, working on financials or any number of other business tasks.
