The Ubuntu Install Continues
December 6, 2006 – 9:50 pm
As I originally wrote in my last posting about Ubuntu entitled, Ubuntu: Friendly Linux for Human Beings, I got talking about this interesting little operating system. I had recently bought a dell laptop and as you may or may not know dell does not ship system disks with their systems but I was pleased to learn from Ubuntu that if you run into this problem there is a solution to your problems.
The fifth option “Dell OS Recovery Cd creation” tool is no longer available.
The solution is to telephone your vendor and ask for a proper CD. My experience with Dell was pleasant. It took less than ten seconds for the customer service representative to offer to send me such a CD for free. They must get asked for that a lot.
me: “I am about to install Ubuntu linux and that will change my partition table. I was not given an OS install disk with my system, but a system restore program which is on a hidden partition. If, for some reason, the PC restore tool is no longer able to find the image partition, I would not be able to restore my system. The system restore tools that came with my system are not adequate for my needs. I need an operating system disk. Would you send me one?”
Dell Representative: (clickety click sounds for a few seconds) “Sure, we’ll send one out to you. It should take two or three days for you to receive it.”

Now as most people who read web pages know you don’t believe everything that you read on the net. Also having heard past stories about Dell’s support either phone or via email I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I emailed Dell Customer Support on a Sunday and naturally I wasn’t expecting to hear back that day but today I received the following email…

… Now that is what I call excellent online customer service. Why? Because I didn’t have to follow up with them or get nasty while I waited for them to respond. They knew me and called me by my name correctly and also left the door open in case I had future problems. While this is only part of what makes good customer service it does go to show you that the little things go far when it comes to pleasing most customers.
Stay tuned for the next part of this which will be when I’ve received the CDs from dell and I am creating the dual boot on my dell laptop.
Luc
Enjoying great customer service
