Business Geeks - Who you do look up to?
October 6, 2006 – 9:55 amI am sure that anyone who has a business also has someone that they look up to. For that reason i decided to start the “Business Geeks” category. I know that i personally look up to certain successful people and i figure that most entrepreneurs and smaller business owners have their favorites too.
A called a “geek” is not a bad thing… its a compliment!
The definition of a geek states “a person who is extremely interested and knowledgeable” and in this case applying that knowledge in business.
Every month i’d like to feature a “Business Geek” so any suggestions certainly are welcome. Looking forward to reading your responses.

Most young entrepeneurs can look to 37signals for inspiration. I do. They’re obviously out in the forefront of successful young business people in the 2.0 phase of the Web. David Heinemeier Hanson is known for creating the Ruby on Rails framework, and Jason Fried is the CEO of 37s. I always thought DHH was the full brains behind the company, but that was my ignorance — I have learned they all have it going on. They’re the definition of iconoclastic — underdoing your competition is one of their tenents.

Also someone of interest is Fred Gratzon who wrote The Lazy Way To Success which is just great.
And one more business person I look up to is Bo Peabody. I’m 33 so I recall the days of Tripod which was his creation. He ended up selling it for stock which became worth hundreds of millions of $s. His easy to read book which I highly suggest is Lucky or Smart?.
Hope these can inspire and point some people in the right direction.

Hello Jason,
Good to hear from you. Yeah the “37Signals” talk is pretty big these days. All of these guys seem like great candidates for business geek of the month. I remember the days of tripod… wow now i feel pretty old (being all of 26 myself). What company did Fred run? Just curious.
Thanks for the posting Jason and talk soon!

Jason Fried is actually the CEO of 37 Signals. You should also check out their pdf book called getting real. It’s under $20. I bought it and it has changed the way I work and code quite a bit… On top of using ruby on rails.

Hi Jason,
Thanks for the tip. I’ll have a look for that. You sound as though you are a coder yourself. If that is the case… What is your language of preference to code in? I am guessing ‘Rails’ but maybe i am wrong. Talk soon Jason,

Well naturally who doesn’t love Ruby these days?
I went to school for software engineering and have programmed over the last 10-ish years in the following languages/order.
C/C
Java
asp w/ vb
asp.net w/ vb .net
…open source awakening …
php
Ruby /RoR
I still like php for quick and dirty work. For web apps, which I’ve done two pretty big ones, I use RoR now. I also try to use ruby for everything I do. I have many scripts to automate things such as getting large amounts of xml and idx (real estate data) into databases. I used to use php’s simplexml for that but prefer Ruby now… For no good reason except that I find Ruby more fun to write.
How about you?

I was in Comp Sci myself and i’ve only been programming for a few years (maybe 4-5 years tops)
I started in
VB 6
Java/JSP
PHP/ASP/AJAX
I haven’t done much RoR myself simply because i prefer PHP lately. Whats the huge allure for you to develop in RoR? just curious. I’ve been working on my own businesses as long as i’ve been developing… maybe they go hand in hand? Who Knows but i am sure that there is a way to draw a corelation between them.
Talk soon

Hey Lucas, sorry for getting back to you so late :-p
I just really love the Ruby language. And I think a lot of thought went into the rails framework. I already write php in a MVC structure, so it’s nice to usr RoR and have a lot of the grunt work done ahead of time.
I see you gave me credit for mentioning DHH, thank you
If you would, shoot me an email I just set up wordpress on my server to promote my freelance career a little better. I see you mentioned all over the place… Maybe you wan to let me in on some of your secrets?

Hello Jason,
That’s okay about the late reply. It’s never too late.
Usually working with a solid framework helps. I am really experimenting lately in terms of languages. Starting to do more ASP.NET 2.0 lately… microsoft i know but i am looking for a ton of DB functionality with Server 2005 in a language.
Your welcome of the credit Jason… anytime!
I’ll shoot you an email… sure thing. Freelancing ain’t easy… i am actually aiming to launch a service/application for businesses shortly… getting ready to do market research, coding and grow it slowly lately. I don’t mind sharing and trading secrets. Talk to you soon Jason,
