Re-Design the Layout of your Site

September 11, 2006 – 7:45 am

I was recently reading a thread off my favorite web development community site, SitePoint, where a member was talking about how often people should update their sites. I personally think that most current sites aren’t timeless; they are dynamic, meaning that they are consistently changing.

Part of the reason i take this side is that it takes time and effort to develop a solid web property is that it does not happen over night. The standard dogma of “If i have a website people will find it” should be well dead especially with all the SEO and online marketing information floating around these days.

Some standard things they you should forever be updating are…

  • Landing Pages - When people come to your site you can control how they access it and use it. Most people developing website still do not practice this because it has to do with in depth human interaction design which takes time to monitor, revamp, and test.
  • Link Exchanges - Let’s face it, if you are able to grab traffic from other relevant sites and in a sense build a network of sites linking to your site you will build valid traffic to your site
  • Article Submissions - With people writing original content more and more these days that is valid and inline with their business plans they need to be focused on having read what they are writing and submitting it to the right sources with high traffic. Your work needs an audience!
  • Revamping Physical Layout - This goes back to the “Landing Page” point i made. If you are developing a site for other people then chances are you’ll need to keep updating it and making the layout and usability easier to use or people will just stop coming to your site.

While i am sure that I missed some other areas that could be touched upon i figure this is a good start to get you thinking about ideas that will help you when it comes to revamping your site. I know that i am constantly updating CommerceCubes and it is very much still in its infancy. I can only imagine what it will look like in two years from now.

Most recently I updated the Permalinks on here to make it easier for search engines to find as I wrote about in a past posting. The next thing I am in the progress of doing is fixing the “Development Services” portion of this site and re-ordering the information found within.
