Adwords goes Mobile - What does this mean for online businesses?
September 7, 2006 – 10:01 pmI am a big advocate for m-commerce personally and I have to tell you that I am really looking forward to the day when m-commerce comes “centre stage”. After hearing that Google is entering the ring with AdWords campaigns that can now be seen on mobile phones it is only a matter of time until commerce comes full circle on mobile devices in general. Naturally it will not suite all businesses to develop systems for mobile use but it will be interesting never the less.
Google is always looking for ways to monetize parts of the newest technology so its no surprise that AdWords goes mobile. I am wondering what kind of conversion rates people that use this feature should expect because most people aren’t comfortable buying off of mobile devices these days. Like any good new technology there is a period when it is uncertain how well it will work simply because of the “trust” factor. Those first people to test the market by buying promote via word of mouth by saying “Hey you gotta try this out”, or “I paid for my parking on my cell phone”. God bless those guys and girls because if it wasn’t for them some businesses would never see the light of day.

I would say that you need to evaluate why and when to use ads like these because they’ll be of more benefit to people whose business can benefit from mobile searches like restaurants, flower shops and other physical (Brick and Mortar) businesses. Online businesses may be at a disadvantage because why surf on your phone when you can surf the net at home and buy those fuzzy bunny slippers in the comfort of your own home instead of on the subway at 1 am?
