The MAC vs PC debate - Part 1
August 10, 2006 – 12:32 pmThe Mac Side… the new idea of the dead PC
Now most people who have anything to do with computers have a stance on this issue. Some people are Pro MAC and other is Pro PC. Both camps are heavily rooted in there opinions of the other platform’s operations, fatal flaws and disadvantages. Noticing that Apple seems to be changing with the times I am wondering what the next 20 years of computing and business will look like?
Since Apple started popping Intel’s chips into their next generations of MAC computers it seems that more people are buzzing about MAC computers. PCs are seen unchanging, cheaper to purchase and are compatible with almost all types of software on the market today. So many people who originally got into Macs were art students who maybe got a taste for them in art school but with Apple positioning the Mac as a computer for Life could this view of Mac owners change? No longer are they nerdy graphic design students. Now accountants, entrepreneurs, and even grandma are getting close to Macs. For many years Macs have also been much higher priced than that of a PC but now the pricing is down making it very affordable to get your hands on a Mac.
Compatibility - This has always been the big issue with Mac, well that and price. Now that you can run Windows on a Mac and perhaps create a dual boot between the two on both machines you can have the best of both worlds now.
‘Sexiness’ Factor – The image around PCs is that they work, they are cheap and they work with almost all software (except Mac software). Macs on the other hand, are sleek, sexy, lightweight, and fast and the list goes on. Sure manufacturers have tried to change the look of PCs but to some people a… “PC is just a PC”.
The reason I am talking about this is that I wonder how it will change business for years to come if more people adopt Macs over the use of the PC… sure business owners may still run windows on there Mac but will the philosophy of how they do business change?
Maybe more business owners will become responsive to change? Maybe they’ll adapt different corporate policies that favor and benefit their employees and customers than just the dollars coming in the door? Sure business is business but let’s face it… Work can and should be fun! After all, can’t you be in business and be a hippie? After all as Forrest Gump says “Mama said a man only needs so much money and the rest is just for show”
I won’t bother doing a poll on who likes which better computer architecture because that has been so over done. I merely wanted to raise the idea. I know I’ve been looking at getting a Mac lately myself and I strongly enjoy my PC (I am typing this article on a PC right now) but I’d like to see what the hype is about. I am afraid I may never come back if I do.
Some people say that it (Macs) are a great computer to use. What I figure has kept most people from buying a Mac in terms of business users is that the applications couldn’t be used that they needed to run everyday business and once again Apple is positioning itself for small business owners to get all the functionality they’d ever need out of a Mac. Could it have to do with PodCasts and Podcasting? I don’t know but that is something business owners are using to promote themselves these days.
