Market to the Masses… No i’d rather market to YOU! When you’re ready!

August 14, 2006 – 5:22 am

I’ve been reading Seth Godin’s book lately on “Permission Marketing“.  I am just opening my eyes to the ways many advertisers fail because of using what Seth calls “Interruption Marketing”.  In a way this publication allows me to market to anyone looking to gain information about e-commerce systems, commerce systems and business systems in general in a more “passive” manner.  With so much information out there today read for the digesting I’d rather keep CommerceCubes as a repository of information.  Read it when you want to, when you need help or when you are just interested in what is being talked about.  I am not going to go out of my way and say “Hey you… pay attention to me!”… Did that ever work when you went to school?  Of course not!

The books the Seth writes (at least from reading this one) aren’t necessarily ground-breaking or new age.  He actually is trying to get you, the advertiser/marketer, to pay closer attention to the way messages of companies are delivered, how successful they are, why they fail and how you can improve this.  While I am just getting into his Permission Marketing book I am already learning and getting new ideas for CommerceCubes.  I kind of borrowing from Pareto’s principle or the 80/20 Rule as it’s also known that states….

80% of the consequences stem from 20% of the causes.

In the simplest form the 80:20 rule can be applied in many different and various ways.  Some look at it as a universal truth of sorts and others simply dismiss it.  Whatever the case, the 80:20 rule can be linked to the general idea behind permission marketing.  Permission Marketing is a “soft sell” approach to marketing which is successful if for nothing else because the people you market to are genuinely interested in what you are selling because they are choosing to engage you.

I cannot wait to read through the rest of the book as I suspect I’ll find some more thinks that i hadn’t thought about.
